Ulaanbaatar

Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia's vibrant capital, sits on the edge of the vast steppe—a city where Soviet-era apartment blocks stand alongside Buddhist monasteries and ultra-modern skyscrapers. It's a place of dramatic contrasts: brutal winters give way to short, intense summers; nomadic tradition meets urban energy; and the spiritual life of the city pulses through its temples and markets. Despite its chaotic traffic and pollution, Ulaanbaatar has an irreverent spirit and genuine warmth that draws travelers seeking something radically different from the usual circuit. Worth it for the raw intensity of the place: the Gandan Monastery's golden spires rising above the city's din, the vast Sunday market where you can buy anything from cashmere to eagle talons, and the remarkable openness of Mongolian people. Stay long enough to venture out to ger camps on the surrounding steppe—just an hour or two away—and you'll find the real magic. This is a city that rewards curiosity and doesn't try to be easy.

January averages minus 21.3 degrees and July plus 19: a forty-degree swing in the same place. With a jump like that, the question is not which month has the best weather but which of the two cities that exist here you want to see, and how much rain you will accept in exchange for warmth.

The capital's streets have names, but almost nobody navigates by them. People go by district, khoroo, the name of the complex and the entrance number, finished off with a landmark. And in 2016 the country went further still: it adopted a three-word grid as its national addressing system.
