It only rains fifty-three days a year here.

Toledo receives 337.3 millimetres of rain over barely 52.8 days with precipitation, and 3,014 hours of sunshine a year. In August the thermometer has reached 44.2 degrees and in January it has dropped to 13.4 below zero. This is a plateau climate with no middle ground, and the city has little shade to offer.

For the traveller who stays when the last train goes back to Madrid.

Since 15 November 2005, the high-speed line has put Toledo under thirty minutes from Madrid. That turned a city of 87,000 into the most convenient day trip in Spain. This trip proposes the opposite: arrive in the afternoon, sleep inside the old town, and have the city to yourself twice.

03Worth knowing1
Almost none of the damascene work you will see is steel.

Damascening means inlaying gold or silver wire into a darkly oxidised steel ground. Toledo has been Europe's great centre for the technique. But the production filling the shop windows today is largely machine-made and on tin, not on steel, and it is worth knowing how to tell before you buy.
