Moroni

Moroni, the capital of Comoros, is a vibrant port city where the Indian Ocean laps at the edges of winding streets and colorful markets. Perched on the slopes of a volcanic island, it feels both intimate and alive—a place where Arab, African, and French influences blend in the architecture, the food, and the rhythm of daily life. The medina pulses with energy; narrow lanes open onto small squares where locals gather, and the air carries the scent of spices and salt water. Moroni takes 2,700 millimetres of rain a year over 167 days. There is no dry season here: there is one month less wet than the rest — October, with 97 millimetres — and eleven months above it. The question is not when it does not rain, but when it rains least.

For the traveller who climbs a caldera three by four kilometres.

Karthala rises 2,361 metres directly behind Moroni and ends in a caldera some three by four kilometres across. It has erupted more than twenty times since the nineteenth century, most recently in January 2007, and in May 2006 the lava at the summit was visible from the city. This trip consists of climbing to the rim and looking over.
