Gray Lima: When the Desert Blooms

You think Lima is sun, ceviche and beach. But its postcard summer (December–April) is borrowed: it's when the city empties toward the southern beaches. The real Lima appears under the garúa — the 'donkey's-belly' sky from May to November — a rainless mist that turned its literature melancholic and that, almost miraculously, waters the desert: as the capital greys over, the hills around it turn green.
