Kyoto

Kyoto is where Japan's classical soul still breathes. For over a thousand years it was the imperial capital, and that weight of history—those temples, gardens, and geisha districts—hasn't faded; it lives in the city's bones. Walking its neighborhoods, you move between centuries: ancient shrine gates frame moss-covered stone lanterns; narrow wooden machiya townhouses line streets where kimono-clad figures still pass. It's contemplative without feeling static, rooted in tradition without being stuck in it.
