Stockholm

Stockholm is a city that seems to float on water—built across fourteen islands where the Baltic meets Lake Mälaren, it's a place of crisp northern light, elegant waterfront vistas, and a particular kind of Scandinavian calm. The old town, Gamla Stan, is a maze of narrow cobbled streets lined with pastel buildings and independent cafés; the broader city beyond is modern, design-conscious, and efficiently beautiful, with museums and galleries of real substance. You'll find yourself walking a lot, and every direction offers something: a sudden vista across the water, a hidden courtyard, a small bookshop or vintage store that feels like a local secret.

In Stockholm the month is decided by the light, not the thermometer

Between the longest and the shortest day there are twelve and a half hours of difference: 18 h 44 min against 6 h 11 min. With only 525 millimetres of rain a year, water is not the problem here. The problem —or the gift— is how many hours you can be outdoors before it goes dark.

The Vasa survived because the Baltic is too fresh

A wooden ship from 1628 should not exist. In any other sea, a wood-boring mollusc would have taken it apart within decades. The Baltic has so little salt that the mollusc cannot live there, and that is why Stockholm has a whole seventeenth-century ship rather than fragments.
