Bern

Bern is a medieval masterpiece tucked into a loop of the Aare River, where cobblestone streets and sandstone arcades transport you straight back to the 15th century. Switzerland's capital feels intimate rather than grand—a place where you wander, discover, and breathe in centuries of history without pretense. The city's soul lives in its old town, a UNESCO World Heritage site where every corner reveals a fountain, a quiet square, or a half-timbered façade that seems frozen in time. In Bern the month is decided by the river temperature

The whole city turns to the Aare for four months a year and turns its back for the other eight. The threshold is not in the air but in the water: below 16 degrees the river is not a plan, and it only reliably clears that from June to August.

Interlaken is under an hour away by train, with hourly departures and several direct services a day. That allows an underused formula: sleep in a small capital with an old town, a river and arcades, and go up into the mountains for the day.

In Bern you swim the river downstream, and there is a last-exit sign

You do not swim against the current: you walk upstream, get in and let yourself be carried to the point where you get out. That the city has had to sign the last possible exit, in three languages, says a good deal about how this works.
